Walid in 1997 was appointed as Consultant Microbiologist/Infection Control Doctor of The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust. He undertook the role of Clinical Skills Co-ordinator of the Postgraduate Education Centre, then Lead Clinician in Clinical Effectiveness of the Trust. He was then appointed as Director of Infection Prevention and Control for the Trust in 2000 to-date. He was granted Honorary Senior Lecturer status with the University of Sheffield. On a national level, he was an external advisor to the Care Quality Commission (2006 – 2009) and was involved in inspecting several hospitals in relation to compliance with the Hygiene Code.

He was also a member of the National Advisory Group in the reduction of MRSA and HCAIs and has assisted in reducing HCAIs in NHS Trusts. He led the Level 7 Credit 30 Healthcare Associated Infections Module at Sheffield Hallam University. He was also instrumental in the education and training of international doctors, nurses, dentists and pharmacists at the University and regional NHS Trusts.
