Professor Thomas Unger is Emeritus Professor of Pharmacology and Experimental Medicine at CARIM, School for Cardiovascular Diseases, Maastricht University, The Netherlands. From April 2012-2017, he was the Scientific Director of CARIM. From 2001-2012, he was Director of the Institute of Pharmacology and Founding Director of the Centre for Cardiovascular Research (CCR) at the Charité, Berlin, Germany.

Professor Unger studied medicine in Germany and the UK and gained his MD from the University of Heidelberg, Germany. He then carried out postdoctoral research at the Clinical Research Institute of Montréal, Canada, and the Department of Pharmacology in Heidelberg, where he received his PhD in Pharmacology. Until 2001, Professor Unger held professorships in pharmacology and hypertension research at the Universities of Heidelberg and Kiel, Germany.
