Thomas Payne PhD, NCTTP

Dr. Payne is a professor with tenure in the Department of Otolaryngology and Communicative Sciences, School of Medicine, a member of the UMMC Cancer Institute with service on the Scientific Leadership Committee, and director of the ACT Center for Tobacco Treatment, Education and Research at UMMC. He is a clinical psychologist and has been involved in clinical, research, and educational aspects of behavioral medicine for over 25 years. He has trained many clinical psychologists in his previous role as supervisor and Associate Director of Training at the Jackson UMMC / VAMC Psychology Residency Consortium.

Dr. Payne has been instrumental in developing clinical treatment and training programs to help patients quit tobacco use. He currently serves on the ATTUD / NAADAC / CTTTP Certification Committee charged with establishing a national credential for Tobacco Treatment Specialists, targeted for full implementation in 2019. He has provided direct services or clinical supervision in the treatment of thousands of patients. He has been a Principal Investigator or Investigator on FDA-funded (Tobacco Centers for Regulatory Science), NIH-funded (NIDA, NCI, NHLBI, NIDCR), and pharmaceutical industry-sponsored (IIR; clinical trials) studies addressing tobacco use and treatment.
