Thomas P. Pittelkow DO, MPH

Thomas P. Pittelkow, D.O., M.P.H., is a triple board-certified physician specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Pain Medicine, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He serves as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Associate Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. His clinical expertise focuses on cancer pain management, advanced neuromodulation therapies, chronic spine and nerve pain, and comprehensive interventional pain medicine.

Dr. Pittelkow earned associate degrees from the University of St. Thomas and Lawrence University before completing a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Minnesota. He received both his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) and Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degrees from Des Moines University. He subsequently completed a combined Internal Medicine and Pediatrics residency at the University of Utah, followed by a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, fellowships in Pain Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and service as Chief Resident at the Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education.

At Mayo Clinic, Dr. Pittelkow provides comprehensive care for patients with chronic pain, cancer-related pain, neuropathic pain, complex regional pain syndrome, spinal disorders, and refractory pain syndromes. He has extensive experience with advanced interventional procedures, including spinal cord stimulation, dorsal root ganglion stimulation, intrathecal targeted drug delivery systems, peripheral nerve stimulation, radiofrequency ablation, ultrasound-guided interventions, and nerve blocks. His approach emphasizes individualized, evidence-based treatment plans that improve function, mobility, and quality of life.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Pittelkow serves as Associate Program Director of the Mayo Clinic Pain Medicine Fellowship, where he mentors residents and fellows and contributes to curriculum development and physician education. He lectures nationally and internationally on advanced pain interventions and has served in leadership roles with fellowship education committees and professional organizations dedicated to pain medicine and rehabilitation.

Dr. Pittelkow is an active researcher and educator whose scholarly work focuses on neuromodulation, interventional pain management, cancer pain, chronic spine disorders, and medical education. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and presentations that advance the understanding and treatment of complex pain conditions while promoting innovative, patient-centered approaches to pain care.
