Dr. Thomas G. Gleason is currently working at Asheville Heart, USA. and he is Co-Director of the Heart and Vascular Institute at UPMC. He was the Director of the Center for Thoracic Aortic Disease and Co-Director of the Center for Heart Valve Disease, and he is a member of the Center for Vascular Remodeling and Regeneration at Pitt. Prior to coming to Pittsburgh, he was an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago before which he was an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine.
Dr. Gleason got his BA in Chemistry at Middlebury College in Vermont. He then earned his MD from Rush Medical College in Chicago and his MS in Surgery/Immunology from the University of Virginia. He completed residencies in Surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery from the University of Virginia and the University of Pennsylvania, respectively. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Gleason’s current research interests include thoracic aortic diseases, including aortic dissection, ascending aortic (vascular) biology, bicuspid valve-associated aortopathy, and other heritable disorders of the thoracic aorta (e.g. Marfan syndrome, Loeys-Dietz syndrome, and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome). He has distinct clinical interests in aortic valve repair, valve-sparing aortic root reconstruction, and thoracic aortic reconstructions including endovascular aortic stent grafting. He also has interests in transcatheter aortic valve replacement/implantation and the management of cardiac and aortic infections.
