Thomas B. Comfere MD

Thomas B. Comfere, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and a consultant in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. He is a board-certified anesthesiologist and critical care specialist with expertise in intensive care medicine, perioperative management, clinical informatics, and outcomes research.

Dr. Comfere earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf, Germany. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine, a residency in Anesthesiology, and a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Mayo Clinic. His advanced training provided a strong foundation in the management of critically ill patients and perioperative care for complex surgical populations.

Board-certified in both Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology, Dr. Comfere combines clinical excellence with a strong interest in healthcare technology and quality improvement. His professional interests include critical care, perioperative outcomes research, medical education, electronic health records, physiologic monitoring systems, and digital health solutions that improve patient safety and clinical efficiency.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Comfere has held numerous leadership and committee roles at Mayo Clinic, including positions related to enterprise electronic health record initiatives, critical care informatics, physiologic monitoring, and digital strategy. He is an active member of organizations such as the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists, and the American Medical Informatics Association.
