Prof. Guthua did his postgraduate training at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and his residency training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Boston Children’s Hospital, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. He also rotated at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI) as a Senior Resident. He was the Chief Residence in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard, in 1987. He is the founding chief of service of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and former Dean, School of Dental Sciences, University of Nairobi, Nairobi, Kenya.

Prof. Guthua’s research interests include trauma, wound healing (Keloid and Hypertrophic scars), wild animal injuries, and regional reconstruction. He has published over ninety (90) papers in Peer-reviewed Scientific Journals and has given many presentations and Scholarly lectures in the regional and international fora, related to the discipline of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Currently, Prof. Guthua is the Project Leader for the establishment of the Institute of Head and Neck Surgical Sciences (UNIHANSS), University of Nairobi.
