Steven R. Demeester MD, FACS

Steven R. DeMeester, M.D., earned his medical degree from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine and subsequently completed both a general surgery residency and critical care fellowship at the University of Michigan. He then went on to complete cardiothoracic surgery training, with special emphasis on general thoracic surgery, at Barnes Hospital, Washington University in St. Louis. Following a one-year esophageal surgery fellowship at the University of Southern California, he joined the faculty and ultimately achieved the rank of Full Professor and Clinical Scholar.  In May of 2016, after nearly 20 years at USC, he left to go into private practice at the Oregon Clinic in Portland, Oregon.

Dr. DeMeester’s clinical practice focuses on innovative minimally invasive and endoscopic approaches to treat esophageal and gastric disorders. In addition to training fellows and residents, he is CEO of the Foundation for Research and Education in Esophageal and Foregut Disease and directs an annual CME course on esophageal disorders.

His research focuses on esophageal motility abnormalities, gastroesophageal reflux, Barrett’s esophagus, and esophageal cancer.  His work has led to over 150 peer-reviewed publications, numerous book chapters, and invited lectures throughout the world.   He is a member of numerous societies, including the American Surgical Association, and is on the Editorial Board of The Annals of Surgery.
