Stéphanie Debette, MD Ph.D., is a Professor of Epidemiology/Public Health at the University of Bordeaux and a practicing Neurologist at Bordeaux University Hospital. She serves as Director of the University of Bordeaux – Inserm Bordeaux Population Health research center. Prof. Debette has been leading large collaborative genomic and epidemiological studies on stroke, cognitive traits, and imaging markers of brain aging, especially cerebral small vessel disease, aiming to decipher the molecular mechanisms underlying brain aging and to improve the prevention and treatment of stroke and dementia (> 250 articles in high impact journals, including first or last author in Nature, Nat Genet, Lancet Neurol, BMJ.). Prof. Debette leads a European Research Council grant and is the principal investigator of national and European grants. Since the end of 2019, she is the principal investigator of the RHU SHIVA project (Stopping cognitive decline and dementia by fighting covert cerebral small vessel disease) of the Investment for the Future program. She has been awarded the Claude Pompidou Foundation prize for dementia research and the scientific excellence award of the European Stroke Organization. A former Fulbright and Bettencourt-Schueller fellow and adjunct associate professor at Boston University, she was a visiting professor at Kyoto University. She serves on the research steering committee of the CHARGE consortium and chaired the International Stroke Genetics Consortium (ISGC) between 2017 and 2019. She also served as vice-president for external relations at the University of Bordeaux (2018-22) and chaired the ENLIGHT European University Alliance board of directors (2019-22). Prof. Debette also co-initiated the neurectomies summer school, an international course on “neuroepidemiology in the omics era” and co-edited a book on the risk factors of stroke and cerebrovascular disease. She is a member of the editorial boards of Stroke and the International Journal of Stroke and the founder of the Music for the Brain philanthropic initiative.
