Dr. Stavros Memtsoudis is board certified in anesthesiology and critical care medicine. He joined HSS after completing subspecialty training in critical care medicine, cardiac, and thoracic anesthesiology. Dr. Memtsoudis is widely recognized for his clinical expertise in the perioperative care of orthopedic patients with advanced cardiovascular and pulmonary disease and for his prolific research into perioperative care. Dr. Memtsoudis is the Director of Critical Care Services within the Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care & Pain Management.

As Senior Scientist, Dr. Memtsoudis directs research initiatives focused on cardiopulmonary physiology and population-based outcomes research. His findings have been published in over 170 peer-reviewed articles. Due to his prominence in the field of perioperative research, Dr. Memtsoudis has won a number of prestigious research awards and frequently lectures nationally and internationally. He serves on the board of directors and holds research-related leadership positions with the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine and the Society of Anesthesia and Sleep Medicine.

Dr. Memtsoudis mentors research fellows at HSS and maintains a close relationship with the Paracelsus Medical University in Salzburg in Austria, where he also holds a professorship in anesthesiology. He serves on editorial boards of scientific journals such as Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine and acts as a reviewer for major medical research publications and national and international research foundations. Dr. Memtsoudis has authored a number of perioperative guidelines and is widely considered an expert in the perioperative management of orthopedic patients and those with sleep apnea.
