Dr Shubulade Smith is a consultant psychiatrist with 19 years’ experience in psychiatry (12 years at consultant level). She is also a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College London.

Dr Smith works at the Bethlem Royal Hospital of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, where she runs the forensic intensive care unit. Before this she worked at the Maudsley Hospital, where she ran the general intensive care unit. Her ward was recently shortlisted for Psychiatric Team of the Year. Dr Smith was voted a BMA pioneering consultant and nominated as a Woman of the Year in 2002 for the development of her “One Stop Shop”, a medication review and physical monitoring clinic for people with mental health problems. She is known nationally and internationally for her work in the hormonal and reproductive effects of antipsychotic medications. Dr Smith has experience in using psychotherapeutic techniques for treating mental disorders and has worked with a number of individual patients using psychodynamic and cognitive therapy as well as running a psychodynamic group for people with personality disorders for two years. She thus has a very holistic approach to psychiatric care, valuing the importance of the complex interactions between the biological, psychological and social aspects of a person, how these shape an individual and how attention to this complexity allows a better determination of how best to help that individual.
