Dr. Sandra M. Herrmann is a Professor of Medicine and a consultant in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA. She obtained her medical degree from the Pontificia Universidade Catolica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Porto Alegre, Brazil, and completed her Internship and Nephrology fellowship at the PUCRS -Hospital São Lucas. She did her post-doctoral research fellowship and then completed her Internal Medicine Residency and Nephrology Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA. She focused on the nephrotoxicity of cancer immunotherapies and the mechanisms of hypertensive kidney disease. In particular, Dr. Herrmann's studies of renovascular disease focus on pathways of inflammation and injury in ischemic nephropathy and the potential for repair of the injured kidney using regenerative medicine.

Her research interests are onco-nephrology, onco-hypertension, renovascular hypertensive disease, and regenerative medicine in nephrology. She has received an NIH-NIDDK K08 career development award to investigate hypoxic preconditioning for improving the function of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells in patients with hypertensive kidney disease. Dr. Herrmann's research in onco-nephrology focuses on the nephrotoxicity of cancer therapeutic agents, including immune checkpoint inhibitors, chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy, and other targeted cancer therapies such as VEGF/TKI inhibitors.
