Sandra Nelson MD is an Infectious Diseases physician at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. At MGH Dr. Nelson is an Associate Clinical Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases and oversees the Program in Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Therapy (OPAT). Her particular academic interest is in the care of patients with musculoskeletal infections; at MGH she directs the Program in Musculoskeletal Infectious Diseases which is actively engaged in clinical care, educational efforts, and in research on treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal infection.

She was a delegate to the 2013 and 2018 International Consensus Meetings on Periprosthetic Joint Infections, where she worked to create a new working definition of periprosthetic shoulder infections. She sat on the panel for a systematic review of the management of postoperative surgical site infections of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS). She is a Past-President of the Musculoskeletal Infection Society (MSIS) and recently completed a five-year tenure on its Executive Board.
