Samuel Asirvatham MD

Dr. Samuel J. Asirvatham attended Christian Medical College in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India, followed by an internship at Columbia University Hospital in New York City. He was Chief Resident at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and completed fellowships at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City and Mayo Graduate School of Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is currently a Professor of Medicine and Consultant in the Division of Cardiovascular Diseases and in the Division of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine. Dr. Asirvatham is also Program Director for the Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Training Program at Mayo Clinic Rochester and Cardiovascular Liaison for Research Translation.

Dr. Asirvatham’s clinical interests include radiofrequency ablation of ventricular tachycardia and atrial fibrillation and implantation of newer defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization devices, particularly in patients with congenital heart disease. His research interests include the development of a percutaneous epicardial system to close the left atrial appendage, renal nerve stimulation for the treatment of neurocardiogenic syncope, the development of a novel circuit to prevent coagulum formation during radiofrequency ablation procedures, and specifically designed and created tools to allow electrophysiology mapping and ablation through the veins of the central nervous system to treat seizures and other central nervous system disorders. Dr. Asirvatham is a patent holder or co-patent holder on 10 patents, and his innovations are multidisciplinary, combining cardiovascular procedures to impact patients in Neurology, Gastroenterology, and other departments.

Dr. Asirvatham is the author or co-author of nearly 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications. He also serves as Associate Editor for Circulation Arrhythmia & Electrophysiology and as a reviewer for 20 other scientific medical journals, including JCE, JICE, Heart Rhythm, and PACE. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Heart Rhythm Society, for which he is also a member of the planning committee for the HRS national scientific sessions.

An internationally renowned speaker and teacher, Dr. Asirvatham travels extensively and has earned a place in Mayo Clinic’s Teaching Hall of Fame. He was awarded the Heart Rhythm Society’s Distinguished Teacher Award in 2011 and the Outstanding Teacher Award at the International Dead Sea Symposium in 2012.
