Roger M. Greenhalgh, MD, MChir, FRCS, is an emeritus professor of surgery and head of the Vascular Surgery Research Group, Imperial College, London, U.K. He has served as department head and later as dean of Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, London. He played critical roles in the formation and governance of the European Board of Surgery, the European Board of Vascular Surgery, the European Society, and the Journal of Vascular Surgery. He championed the new pathway for vascular surgery training in the U.K. and started the Charing Cross Symposium, one of the best-attended vascular symposia in the world, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.
Greenhalgh has received 30 international honorary memberships, prizes, and awards–most recently an International Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Vascular Surgery. He has published more than 400 manuscripts and books. Dr. Greenhalgh’s most significant contributions have been in promoting level-one evidence in vascular surgery practice. He has led more than a dozen trials, many of which are prospective randomized studies in the field of aneurysm management, helping to shape our understanding of the natural history and treatment options for aortic aneurysms and forming the basis of many practice guidelines.
