Dr. Edelman is recognized for pioneering contributions in the field of magnetic resonance imaging. He is the recipient of multiple grants from the National Institutes of Health. His achievements include recruiting and leading an internationally recognized interdisciplinary research group that pioneered the use of MR angiography for imaging of the coronary arteries, applied perfusion and diffusion MRI to the early diagnosis and characterization of stroke, and showed the feasibility of anatomic and functional MRI of the lungs. They developed and/or implemented many techniques for MRI imaging and angiography that are now in widespread clinical use. Dr. Edelman is past-president and receipient of the Gold Medal of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.

His current research is focused on non-contrast methods for MR angiography and improved techniques for cardiac imaging. Dr. Edelman’s research group is also working to implement more accurate imaging methods for early diagnosis of cancer, particularly breast neoplasms; to apply quantitative MR techniques for the early diagnosis of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases and for characterization of traumatic brain injury; to optimize functional imaging techniques to help guide the management of chronic kidney disease; and to use quantitative measures for the early diagnosis of degenerative joint disorders. He has authored or co-authored more than 300 articles and published the 3rd edition of his well-known textbook, Clinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging, in 2006. Most recently he was selected for Best Doctors in America and for Marquis Who's Who in America.
