Dr. Robert Joseph Applegate is a Professor at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He was the lead investigator of a study to evaluate the safety of drug-eluting stents with results published in the American Journal of Cardiology. The Heart Center at Wake Forest Baptist was one of the first in NC to participate in multicenter clinical trials. Applegate's team observed lower cumulative rates of non-fatal heart attacks and deaths at nine months in patients treated with drug-eluting stents compared to patients treated with bare metal stents.
