Dr. Smalling is a native Texan who received his undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering, master’s degree in Bio-Medical Engineering, and Ph.D. from The University of Texas. He is an AOA graduate of The University of Texas Medical School at Houston and completed residency training and cardiology fellowship at the University of California – San Diego. Dr. Smalling is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular medicine, and interventional cardiology and is past president of the American Heart Association, Texas Affiliate. He has been honored as a Distinguished Alumnus of The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, and the College of Engineering, University Texas at Austin.
Dr. Smalling has been named America’s Top Doctor for the past seven years. He has received numerous awards from the American Heart Association including the Distinguished Service Award from the Texas Affiliate in 1990. He is on the editorial boards of Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, The Journal of Interventional Cardiology, and is a past Associate Editor for Circulation. In addition, he holds several patents and has formed a company, Windmill Cardiovascular Systems, to produce a new implantable left ventricular assist device.
Dr. Smalling specializes in coronary artery angiography and revascularization, treatment of adult congenital heart disease percutaneously, and the treatment of valvular heart disease percutaneously. He has significant expertise in the treatment of peripheral vascular disease including carotid stenting, percutaneous endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm, renal, iliac, femoral, and below-knee angioplasty and stenting. Additionally, his team is experienced in utilizing left ventricular assist devices to support high-risk coronary angioplasty and complicated valve treatment procedures.
