Dr Prabal Roy started his academic career as a medical graduate from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belgaum. He then proceeded to do his Masters in General Surgery from the same college. This was followed by a Diplomate from the National Board of Examinations of India in General Surgery. He is a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (FICS), the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo Surgeons (FIAGES), and the Association of Indian Surgeons (FAIS). Dr Prabal Roy believes in extending his knowledge and expertise to others as well, and has participated, since his early years, in medical education, as a tutor accredited by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) to impart training and as a thesis guide to post graduate trainees in General Surgery. Many of his students are, today, successful surgeons in different parts of the country. He is Associate editor with the Indian Journal of Surgery since 2010. He is a member of the Executive Committee of Indian Hernia Society. Dr Prabal Roy is a national faculty participating as speaker for lectures on endovascular, general and weight loss surgery and as operating faculty at workshops at many national workshops.

All common laparoscopic operations like cholecystectomy, appendicectomy, hernias, fistula in ano are routinely performed in large numbers by him. Laparoscopic colorectal operations for rectal prolapse and cancers of colon & rectum are among the advances operations perfomed commonly. Dr Prabal Roy started one of the first centres of Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery in India. He has successfully carried out a wide variety of VATS operations till date, namely mediastinoscopy, lung resections, decortication for empyema, thymectomy for both myasthenia & nonfunctional thymomas, Lung volume reduction surgery and bullectomy etc. He also heads the Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Unit and was the first surgeon in the state of Haryana to establisha bariatric & metabolic surgery program. The commony performed operations by him include Gastric Sleeve Resection, Roux en Y Gastric Bypass, Mini Gastric Bypass and Revisional Bariatric Surgery.
