Poppy Aldam PhD

Poppy Aldam's research involves looking at the physiological changes that occur during the dying process for patients having their life-supporting treatment withdrawn and becoming organ donors. This period has never been the subject of intensive study before and has the potential to have a big impact on the number and quality of organs donated after circulatory death (DCD). Furthermore, understanding the changes that occur during this period could better help medical teams and donor families predict which patients will go on to fulfil their wishes of becoming an organ donors in the event of their death. This research forms the basis of a PhD which she began in February 2016, which is being supervised by Professor Watson (Professor of Transplantation) and Professor Menon (Professor of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care).

She studied medicine at the University of Cambridge, qualifying in 2008 and have been a Registrar in Anaesthesia in the Eastern Deanery since 2010. She has a specific interest in anaesthesia for Transplant surgery and intended to combine this clinical interest with ongoing academic work once she has completed my time as a Research Associate with the BTRU.
