Diabetes mellitus is becoming a global epidemic. The drugs used to treat diabetes have changed dramatically in the last 20 years. The surgical patient with diabetes is becoming more common, and diabetes is a risk factor for a worse surgical outcome. It is now becoming increasingly appreciated that the surgical patient with diabetes has modifiable risk factors as well as non modifiable.

Objectives :

• Appreciate the diabetes pandemic
• Appreciate the modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors associated with surgery on the patient with diabetes
• Examine ways of making the sliding scale/VRIII safer
• Examine the pharmacology of the diabetes medications
• Examine the advantages and disadvantages with regional anaesthesia in the diabetic patient
• Examine the benefits of undertaking day surgery for the patient with diabetes
• Examine the issues in the management of the puerperal patient with diabetes
• Examine the issues in the management of the emergency surgical patient with diabetes
• Examine common pitfalls in the management of the surgical patient with diabetes
