Philippe Bastiaens was born 1963 in Den Helder (Netherlands). He studied biochemistry and molecular physics at the University of Wageningen (Netherlands) and at the University of Georgia (USA) and the University of Illinois (USA). In 1988 he received his diploma (with distinction) in “Engineering in Molecular Sciences” from the University of Wageningen, where from 1989 – 1992 he earned his doctorate in biochemistry with distinction.
From 1993 to 1996 he was postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen in the research group of Thomas Jovin. During this time he became interested in spectroscopic techniques for the investigation of protein interactions in living cells. In 1997 he became a group leader at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London.
