Peter R. Byron, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus in Pharmaceutics, at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Pharmacy, Richmond, Virginia. He has a B.Sc. in Pharmacy and Ph.D. in Immunology, both from Manchester University, England (1970 and 1973). Dr. Byron performed post-doctoral work with S.S. Davis and Robert Notari in pharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics (University of Aston, England, 1974; Ohio State University, 1976). He was Lecturer in Pharmaceutics at Aston (1975–1984), on the faculty at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy (1984-1988) after which he moved to VCU. He was a Visiting Professor at the University of Bath, UK [1995-2001], VCU’s Distinguished Scholar in 1998 and recipient of the GSK International Achievement Award in 2002.
Byron is a Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and served as Chairman of the Aerosols Expert Committee of the United States Pharmacopeia and USP representative on the European Pharmacopeia's Inhalanda working group (1995 – 2005). He has > 160 peer-reviewed original research publications, organizes and co-edits the international meeting series “Respiratory Drug Delivery” and holds a number of patents relating to inhaler development. He has taught widely at undergraduate and graduate levels throughout the Pharmacy curriculum and continues to perform aerosol research at VCU.
