Sakai was born and raised in Japan. He graduated from Yamagata University School of Medicine, Japan in 1988, and completed a radiology residency at Jichi Medical School Hospital, Japan in 1993, and served as a faculty at Jichi Medical School in 1993-2001. He received his PhD from Jichi Medical School in 1998.
Dr. Sakai first came to Boston as a research fellow at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School in 1998-1999. After the fellowship, he went back home but two years later he joined Boston Medical Center as a neuroradiology fellow in 2001. After his completion of the neuroradiology fellowship, he stayed at BU/BMC as a faculty in Radiology.
