Nikhil A. Kumta, MD, MS is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Henry D. Janowitz Division of Gastroenterology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Attending Physician at Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Kumta completed a six-year accelerated BS/MD program, receiving his undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University and his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College.

He subsequently trained in Internal Medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical Center. He remained at Cornell for fellowship training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, during which time he served as Chief Gastroenterology Fellow and also obtained a Masters Degree in Patient-Oriented Research from Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health. He then completed subspecialty fellowship training in advanced endoscopy at Cornell.

Dr. Kumta specializes in pancreatic disease, biliary tract disease, pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions of the gastrointestinal tract, surgical endoscopy, and endoscopic management of obesity. He performs advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), endoluminal stent placement, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), complex polypectomy, and endoscopic treatment of obesity with intragastric balloon placement and endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG). He has clinical and research interests in minimally invasive endoscopic procedures and device innovation.
