Nicolaas C. Schaper MD, PhD

Dr. Nicolaas C. Schaper studied Medicine at Leiden University and was subsequently trained as an internist in Zwolle and Groningen. Subsequently, he obtained his Ph.D. in 1990 on the influence of diabetes mellitus on growth hormone secretion. He has been working in Maastricht since 1988, where he has been department head and trainer of the Endocrinology department since 2003. His special expertise lies in the field of general endocrinology, transsexuality, and complex diabetes mellitus.

He is a member of various national and international working groups and networks, such as the Endocrinology section and the Diabetes Mellitus core group of the Dutch Internist Association. He is also chairman of the national guideline Diabetic Foot, a member of the national guideline Diabetic Neuropathy, member of the Scientific Advisory Board Diabetes Fund Netherlands. He is always very intensively involved in the medicine course at Maastricht University. For his scientific activities in the field of diabetic foot ulcers and diabetes education, he has received several international and nationals prizes.
