Nathan Tykocki, PhD, work discovered that the vasculature of the urinary bladder, due to the unique physiological demands it experiences during bladder filling, possesses distinct contractile properties versus other vessels of similar size. Furthermore, signals from the bladder urothelium, initiated by bladder filling, can directly affect blood flow within the bladder. My scientific training thus far focused on vascular smooth muscle function, specifically in terms of calcium signaling pathways as regulators of vessel contractility. My graduate education in the labs of Dr. Stephanie Watts and Dr. William Jackson (Michigan State University) gave me a solid basis in smooth muscle function, pharmacology, physiology and calcium signaling.
