Dr Michelle Downes is an Associate Professor in Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, Director of GU Pathology, and Division Head of Anatomic Pathology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto. She graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland medical school and undertook training in surgery, followed by a research fellowship in prostate cancer. She completed her Anatomic Pathology residency in Dublin, Ireland, and followed with a clinical fellowship in GU pathology at the University of Toronto.
Dr Downes is the secretary of the International Society of Urologic Pathology and sits on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Association of Pathologists. She is a dataset author for the ICCR urothelial datasets and a contributor to the 5th edition WHO blue book on genitourinary malignancy. She has authored >100 peer-reviewed articles and numerous book chapters and lectured nationally and internationally. Her research interests focus on prognostic and predictive biomarkers in prostate and bladder cancer.
