Michael Grundel Ison MD, MS, FIDSA, FAST

Dr. Michael Ison is a Chief of the Respiratory Disease Branch at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He completed his medical school training at the University of South Florida College of Medicine and obtained training in Internal Medicine at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, Oregon followed by Infectious Diseases at the University of Virginia. He joined the faculty of the Divisions of Infectious Diseases and Organ Transplantation at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in 2005.

Dr. Ison has also been a leader in the Transplant Infectious Diseases arena. He is a past member of the Executive Committee of the American Society for Transplantation’s Transplant Infectious Diseases Study Group, a past member of the AST Infectious Diseases Community of Practice Executive Committee, and chaired the United Network for Organ Sharing’s Disease Transmission Advisory Committee from 2006 – 2010. He has been a member and is the past chair of the Advisory Committee on Blood Safety and Availability.

He is also a past At Large representative on the OPTN/UNOS Board of Directors and a current member of the American Society of Transplantation Board of Directors. He is currently the President of the Transplant Infectious Diseases Section of the Transplantation Society. He, too, has been involved globally as the chair of the Infectious Diseases Editorial Group for the CNT/WHO Project NOTIFY Library and the past leader of the Infectious Diseases group of the World Health Organization Bologna Initiative on Global Vigilance and Surveillance.
