Dr. Melanie L. Yarbrough is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology & Immunology. She received her Ph.D. at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX in 2009. Dr. Yarbrough’s research has focused on evaluating methods for the isolation and identification of urinary pathogens, including multi-drug resistant organisms. She is interested in the continued improvement of diagnostic methods for urinary tract infections (UTI) and other important infections, with an emphasis on the identification of resistance mechanisms. Her additional studies aim to characterize the urinary microbiome to explore links between characteristic microbial communities and the presence of sexually transmitted infections (STI) and UTIs. Together, these studies will provide opportunities for the improvement of both diagnostic and antimicrobial stewardship of genitourinary diseases that have a major impact on public health.
