Dr. Kennedy’s research, clinical, and consulting interests are in diagnosing, treating, and preventing delirium among older emergency department patients. From 2009 to 2012, she led a study that prospectively enrolled 1000 older ED patients and evaluated them for delirium in the ED; subsequently, she developed a risk profile identifying patients at high risk of being delirious in the ED which is currently being validated. Dr. Kennedy and her team are also concluding a pilot study of serum biomarkers for ED delirium.

From 2011-2013, she received funding through the R03 GEMSSTAR and Jahnigen Career Development Awards Programs for a secondary analysis evaluating admitted patients for the development of delirium after hospital admission. Additionally, Dr. Kennedy is interested in clinical outcomes research and previously evaluated ED predictors of early ICU transfer afterward admission. She serves on the BIDMC-HSL Quality and Operations Sub-Committee and the BIDMC Emergency Medicine and Geriatric Care Committee and has lectured nationally on the care of geriatric ED patients. Dr. Kennedy currently serves on a national panel which is developing Clinical Guidelines on Post-Operative Delirium. Dr. Kennedy also has a background and interest in human subject protection and the ethical conduct of clinical research. Dr. Kennedy works internationally with EMC clients on developing research studies and implementing research programs.
