Prof. Dr. Matthias Stelljes has taken over the management of internal bone marrow transplantation within the Medical Clinic A at the UKM (University Hospital Münster). At the same time, the 45-year-old physician has now been awarded a W3 professorship for internal medicine. Stelljes, who completed his studies at the Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel and then worked in clinics in Heidelberg and Switzerland, has been employed at the UKM since 1998.

After successfully completing his training as a specialist in internal medicine with a focus on hematology and internal oncology and being appointed senior physician, he took over the acting management of the internal bone marrow transplantation program in 2011. In the same year, he was appointed extraordinary professor at the University of Münster and has been working as senior physician in charge of clinical and experimental bone marrow transplantation at the Medical Clinic A at the UKM since 2012. In addition to diagnostics and therapy, the BMT center also makes an important contribution to clinical and basic scientific research.

Stelljes' research focuses on optimizing stem cell transplantation therapy for older patients and the treatment of acute leukemia. The stem cell transplantation center at the UKM has one of the largest stem cell transplantation programs in Germany. The catchment area stretches from the North Sea islands through East Westphalia to the northern Ruhr area; more than 200 adult patients and around 40 children are treated every year.
