Matthew K. Wynia MD, MPH, FACP

Dr. Wynia is an internist, a specialist in infectious diseases, and director of the University of Colorado's Center for Bioethics and Humanities. Prior to joining the University, he was the Director of the Institute for Ethics at the AMA, where he also created its Center for Patient Safety and was Director of Patient and Physician Engagement for the AMA's Improving Health Outcomes focus area. The CU Center for Bioethics and Humanities serves the University and state as a forum for exploring the intersections of arts, humanities, ethics, and health care, and for the development of innovative ways to meet modern complex adaptive challenges in health care delivery, education, and policy.

Dr. Wynia's work has explored professionalism; ethics and epidemics; market pressures in medicine; codes of ethics; medicine and the Holocaust; and inequities in health and health care. He has authored more than 140 published articles, book chapters and reports, and a book on fairness in health care benefit design in venues including the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Health Affairs, the American Journal of Bioethics, and other leading medical and ethics journals. He has been a guest on ABC News Nightline, the BBC World Service, NPR, and other programs.

Dr. Wynia is a past president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH) and has chaired the Ethics Forum of the American Public Health Association (APHA) and the Ethics Committee of the Society for General Internal Medicine (SGIM). He cares for patients at the University of Colorado Hospital, and he is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
