Martijn Paul Lolkema MD, PhD

Martijn Lolkema studied medicine at the AMC in Amsterdam and early in his career studied the role of antigen presenting cells in the initiation of immune responses. This work was performed at the Dutch Blood Bank and at the NIH, Bethesda, USA. He became board certified medical oncologist at the UMC Utrecht and defended his thesis: “ Hypoxia Inducible Factor independent role for von Hippel-Lindau tumor suppressor gene” within an NWO funded MD/PhD program in 2008. He subsequently received a Dutch Cancer Foundation award to receive additional research training abroad. He visited the RMH in the UK to perform research on drug development and translational research using model systems such as genetically engineered mice. In 2010 he was appointed staff member at the department of medical oncology at the UMC Utrecht where he was intimately involved in designing and building a national collaborative group to implement Next Generation Sequencing for cancer patients: the Center for Personalized Cancer Treatment (CPCT). Moreover, he chaired the early trials unit in Utrecht and was intimately involved in the development of novel drugs.

In 2014 Dr. Lolkema continued his career as senior staff member at the department of medical oncology of the Erasmus MC Cancer Institute in Rotterdam to continue his work on drug development and the CPCT. Here the focus of clinical and translational research is urogenital cancer and specifically prostate cancer.
