Dr. Sawyer is an infectious disease specialist at Rady Children's Hospital and a professor of clinical pediatrics at UC San Diego. He has been named to the Food and Drug Administration's Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, which will review the COVID-19 vaccines, and is among 11 experts selected for the state of California's COVID-19 Scientific Safety Review Workgroup.

Additionally, Dr. Sawyer is vice chair for education in the UC San Diego Department of Pediatrics and the program director for the UC San Diego/Rady Children's Pediatric Residency Program. He is also the medical director of the UC San Diego San Diego Immunization Partnership and an associate editor for the 2021 American Academy of Pediatrics "Red Book," the report of the Committee on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Along with previously serving on the FDA Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, he is a past member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Infectious Diseases and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. Dr. Sawyer divides his time between clinical care, the residency program, working with public health on the delivery of vaccines and national vaccine policy.
