Dr. Hamner is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston. He is also Medical Director of the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Clinical Team at the Ralph H. Johnson Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Charleston, S.C. Dr. Hamner received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, where he also completed his internship and residency in the Department of Psychiatry.

He is board certified in Psychiatry with added qualifications in Geriatric Psychiatry. He is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Psychiatric Association (Fellow status), American Association of Geriatric Psychiatry, and others. He has a keen interest in the ethics of clinical care and research as reflected by his longstanding service on institutional review boards including his current role as Chair of IRB1 at MUSC. Dr. Hamner’s clinical and research interests include treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), mood disorders, and schizophrenia, geriatric psychiatry, neurobiology of PTSD, phenomenology of co-morbidities in PTSD, and neuroendocrinology. He has lectured extensively on various topics in clinical psychiatry and has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed journal articles, research abstracts, and book and encyclopedia chapters. In addition, he has been the recipient of approximately 80 clinical trial or basic clinical science grants. He has received a number of medical student and psychiatry resident teaching awards. He maintains a busy and rewarding clinical practice.
