Maria Casaverde Marin is a Quality Improvement Operations Coordinator for Denver Health - Colorado largest Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) - which has 9 outpatient sites recognized as NCQA PCMH Level 3 clinics. She is a mother and currently pursuing a master's degree in healthcare administration from Colorado State University. Soon after emigrating from Peru in 2005, Maria's interest in healthcare stemmed when she had to act as an impromptu interpreter for Spanish speaking immigrants in an emergency room in rural Steamboat Springs, CO.
There she found passion in a career focused on enhancing patient access and healthcare quality. As a Resource Navigator for Comunidad Integrada, a non-profit that supports immigrant and community integration, she witnessed the challenges that non-English speaking families experience in accessing healthcare. Later as a multi-county Patient Navigator for Northwest Colorado Health, she recognized that implementing a patient-centered model for the local FQHC had the potential to reduce health disparities.
Becoming interested in the power of technology after an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system integration in her clinic, she pursued a bacheloraes degree in Computer Science through Park University. Synergizing her technical and healthcare knowledge, she implemented a population management system within her clinic's EMR which led to the clinic obtaining their first PCMH NCQA recognition. Long after as a Quality Improvement Specialist with the Colorado Community Health Network, she consulted all 20 Community Health Centers in Colorado on quality improvement projects. Her experience led her to become certified as a NCQA PCMH Content Expert.
