Marc L. Reitman is currently chief of the Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Obesity Branch, NIDDK, NIH. He was an undergraduate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received his M.D. and Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. Trained clinically in internal medicine and in endocrinology, he has worked at the NIH since 1986, except for 2002-2011 when he worked at Merck Research Laboratories. Dr. Reitman is broadly interested in how the body regulates energy metabolism and how obesity and diabetes develop. Current interests include using mice to understand human obesity physiology, the role of body and environmental temperature in energy homeostasis, understanding the neurobiology and physiology of BRS-3 bombesin-like receptor 3, how mice can be used to predict efficacy of human treatments for obesity, and bridging the gap from the lab to the clinic.
