Malcolm Mattes grew up in New Jersey, received a bachelor's degree in Biology at MIT, went to medical school at UCLA, completed an internship in internal medicine at Stanford University, and residency in radiation oncology at New York Methodist Hospital. From 2014-2019 he worked at West Virginia University, before joining the faculty at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

At Rutgers, he specializes in the treatment of prostate cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, gynecologic cancers, and soft tissue sarcoma. In addition to his clinical work, he enjoys teaching medical students and residents about radiation oncology, and effective multidisciplinary cancer care. He has mentored numerous students in a variety of research projects and has led several clinical trials related to immuno-oncology, tumor metabolism, and personalized medicine.
