Dr. Mack C. Mitchell is Vice President for Medical Affairs at UT Southwestern Medical Center and the Nancy S. and Jeremy L. Professor of Gastroenterology. Before joining the faculty at UT Southwestern in 2011, he was Director of Gastroenterology at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and Chairman of Internal Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center. Dr. Mitchell received his M.D. from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine where he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha before completing residency in internal medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and a fellowship in gastroenterology and clinical pharmacology at Vanderbilt University. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

Dr. Mitchell previously served as Chair of the Board of Scientific Councilors of the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and on the Advisory Council of the National Institute for Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the examination committee of the American Board of Internal Medicine, the research committee of AASLD and ABMRF, the Foundation for Alcohol Research. He is the principal investigator for an NIH-sponsored clinical research study on liver disease related to alcohol and has authored or co-authored numerous papers and chapters on alcohol and liver diseases.
