Gattinoni is currently professor of anesthesiology and intensive care medicine and chairman of the department of anesthesiology and intensive care at the University of Milan in Italy. He also is chief of the department of anesthesia, resuscitation, and pain therapy at Policlinico Hospital of Milan. Gattinoni is the author or co-author of more than 200 research articles and reviews, Gattinoni has led numerous cooperative investigative trials, some of which have been published in the British Medical Journal, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and published in The New England Journal of Medicine and other prestigious medical journals around the world.

In addition to the treatment of acute respiratory failure and respiratory physiopathology, his research interests range from parenteral nutrition and metabolic therapy and acid-base equilibrium to the organization of intensive care units, cost-benefit analysis, and prognostic indices. The former editor in chief of Minerva Anestesiologica, Gattinoni serves on the editorial boards of Anesthesia, Rianimazione e Terapia Intensiva, Critical Care, Respiratory Care, and the Italian version of CHEST. Gattinoni is active in a number of professional societies and was the previous president of the World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine and the past president of the Italian National Society of Anaesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care.

He is a founding member of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, where he is a past president and a member of the society's executive committee. A Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Gattinoni has been awarded honorary membership in the German Society of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care and is a recipient of the American Society of Anesthesiology and SCCM Lifetime Achievement Award. Born near Milan, Italy, Gattinoni completed an internship at the Institute of Clinical Medicine II, University of Milan, and received his medical degree cum laude, with the thesis "Aminoglutetimide in Cushing Syndrome" in 1969. Following medical school, Gattinoni served as a Lieutenant in the Alps Corp of the Italian Army. He also has a diploma in public health medicine and board certifications in anesthesiology and laboratory medicine.
