Lluis Ballell PhD

Lluis Ballell-Pages hold a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry of new antituberculars done jointly in the University of Saint Andrews and University of East Anglia. Following a post-doctoral Marie Curie Individual Fellowship in the Pharmaceutical Sciences department of Utrecht University (The Netherlands) where he contributed towards the development of novel applications for chemical proteomics in drug discovery and diagnostics, Lluis Ballell-Pages immediately joined GlaxoSmithKline (DDW-Tres Cantos, Madrid) as a Principal Scientist, where he had the chance to lead various collaborative drug discovery projects in Tuberculosis. During his career at GSK he have been involved in a number of international grant proposals in the areas of TB, Malaria and kinetoplastids, from submission to implementation, in addition to making key contributions to the inception, funding, and development of the Open Lab concept in Tres Cantos that resulted in his present position of Open Lab Head.

Lluis Ballell-Pages has lead interactions with academics, other Pharma, Biotechs and PPPs both in the preclinical and clinical space. As a scientist he has been actively involved in various preclinical and clinical TB and Malaria drug discovery projects and the progression of a new betalactam antibiotic against TB into PoC phase IIa in humans. Lluis Ballell-Pages is a member of the advisory board of and founder of two nanotechnology-based Biotech companies exploiting nanoporous materials that have led to the progression to clinical phase Ib studies of a novel material for a novel indication. Recently, he has been appointed future chairman of the Gordon TB Drug Discovery conference.
