Dr. Lester J. Layfield received his MD degree from the UCLA School of Medicine in 1979. He completed his residency in Pathology in 1984 following which he joined the faculty of the Department of Pathology at UCLA where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1990. He then became Associate Professor of Pathology and Co-director of Cytology at the University of Iowa. Subsequently, he moved to Duke University as Director of the FNA service and the Director of Surgical Pathology in 1992. He was appointed Full Professor at Duke University in 1995. In 1997, he moved to the University of Utah where he headed the FNA service and served as Director of Anatomic Pathology. In 2012 he relocated to the University of Missouri serving as Department Chair until 2018.

Dr. Layfield is a past President of the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology and currently serves on the Executive Board of that society. He is the Senior Associate Editor of Diagnostic Cytopathology. He published over 430 manuscripts in peer review journals. He has presented numerous lectures at national and international meetings. He is a recipient of the Ward Burdick Award for Distinguished Service to Pathology from the ASCP.
