Laurence Rhines received a degree in biology from Princeton and his medical degree from Harvard Medical School. After completing his residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital, he furthered his clinical training in spinal reconstructive surgery and spinal oncology through a fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center where he has remained since 2000.

He is currently professor of neurosurgery and the director of the spine program. He has a strong clinical interest in spinal tumors, co-authoring more than 300 peer-reviewed original research articles and abstracts and collaborating or co-investigating more than 40 protocols. He has been an invited speaker at hundreds of national and international conferences, visiting professorships and training programs.
