Dr. Medeiros received his MD from the University of Massachusetts and did a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston (now Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center). He also completed four years of fellowship training: two years at Stanford University Medical Center (Surgical Pathology and Immunopathology), one year at Massachusetts General Hospital (Hematopathology), and one year at the National Cancer Institute (Hematopathology). His first job was a junior staff position at the National Cancer Institute. His first senior staff position was an Associate Professor of Pathology at Rhode Island Hospital/Brown University of School of Medicine, in Providence, Rhode Island.

He subsequently was appointed Director of Hematopathology at City of Hope National Medical Center, in Duarte, California. In 1998, he joined the faculty at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and he became the first Chair of the newly created Department of Hematopathology in 2002. His interests include the diagnosis of lymphomas, including the use of histologic, immunophenotypic and molecular methods for diagnosis and prognosis, and his recent research interests have focused on diffuse aggressive B-cell lymphomas.
