Kodi Ravichandran is an immunologist and world leader in the area of efferocytosis- the process by which our bodies remove billions of dying cells in the body on a daily basis. This efferocytosis process has a tremendous impact on limiting inflammation and failures in efferocytosis are linked to many human inflammatory diseases (such as arthritis, airway inflammation, and colitis). His laboratory focuses on all aspects of efferocytosis, inflammation, and macrophage/phagocyte biology in multiple disease contexts.

After a degree in Veterinary Medicine (India) and a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology/Immunology (the University of Massachusetts at Amherst), Dr. Ravichandran moved to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/ Harvard Medical School (Boston, MA) for his postdoctoral research. After a highly successful time as a postdoc and Instructor, he was recruited to the University of Virginia as faculty in 1996. After moving up the ranks, he became Harrison Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology in 2010. He received the State of Virginia Governor's Award for Science Innovation in 2011. and was awarded the Robert J. Kadner Mentoring Award for outstanding training of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
br/> As of Jan 2022, Dr. Ravichandran moved to Washington University School of Medicine (St. Louis) as Chief of the Division of Immunobiology in the Department of Pathology and Immunology. He is currently a BJC Investigator and Robert L. Kroc Professor of Immunobiology.
