Dr Kate Sutherland is a Laboratory Head in the Stem Cells and Cancer division. Kate completed her PhD in 2005 with Professors Jane Visvader and Geoffrey Lindeman on mammary gland development at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. During this time she developed a strong interest in using mouse genetics as a tool to understand normal tissue development and tumour initiation.
In 2006 Kate moved to Amsterdam, where she commenced a Postdoctoral position in the laboratory of Professor Anton Berns at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. Her research here focused on identifying the cells-of-origin of different types of lung cancer, using sophisticated mouse models. In early 2013, Kate returned to Melbourne to establish her own laboratory in the Stem Cells and Cancer division where she aims to generate new preclinical mouse models of human squamous cell lung cancer.
