Justiaan Swanevelder MB ChB (Stell), DA (SA), FCA (SA), MMed (Anes), FRCA

Justiaan Swanevelder is a consultant anaesthetist with an interest in cardiac and thoracic anaesthesia.He is member of a team who anaesthetise adults and children during heart and lung operations. Justiaan is originally from Cape Town in South Africa where he did his medical and anaesthetic training.He has been working at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester for the past 12 years and has made the UK his home.

He is happily married to Lynn and has two sons; Christiaan, aged three and a half and Louis who is two years old. Justiaan hopes that both boys will be playing rugby for England soon!After running a few marathons during his early student years, he hung up his running shoes until 2003 when he came back from retirement and completed the London marathon.

Since then he has been participating in triathlons on a social level to fight off his midlife crisis.Justiaan says that his training was reasonable, starting with the 2006 Barrow upon Soar six miles Boxing Day event.He runs about three to four times per week and alternates that with swimming, and cycling to work, to loosen the muscles.But he had to stretch the distances as the marathon approached.
