Julies research is aimed at improving the quality and safety of patient care by optimising clinical decision-making, use of research evidence in practice, and ensuring effective models of service delivery. She leads two programs of research. The first program is focused on Patient Safety with a particular emphasis on the relationships between educational preparation, personal characteristics and decision context on clinical practice behaviours and the accuracy of clinical decisions.
The second program is focused on Health Workforce, in particular advanced nursing practice and nurse practitioner roles, transition to speciality practice, and emergency department service delivery models such as fast track and rapid assessment roles. Julie is also a foundation member of Deakin University's Strategic Research Centre: Centre for Quality and Patient Safety Research.
