Dr. Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte is a globally recognized developmental biologist and regenerative medicine pioneer who serves as Founding Scientist and Senior Vice President at Altos Labs. His research focuses on understanding the biology of cellular rejuvenation and developing technologies that restore cell health to combat aging, injury, and disease.
Prior to joining Altos Labs, Dr. Izpisua Belmonte spent nearly three decades at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, where he held the Roger Guillemin Chair and served as Professor in the Gene Expression Laboratory. His pioneering work has transformed the fields of developmental biology, stem cell biology, regenerative medicine, and cellular reprogramming, providing key insights into embryonic development, tissue regeneration, and the molecular mechanisms underlying aging.
At Altos Labs, Dr. Izpisua Belmonte leads research aimed at programming adult cells into healthier, more resilient states by harnessing principles observed during early development. His laboratory has made landmark contributions to partial cellular reprogramming, demonstrating that aged cells can regain youthful characteristics while maintaining their identity—an approach with the potential to develop therapies for age-related diseases and improve human healthspan.
Dr. Izpisua Belmonte earned degrees in Pharmacy, Pharmacology, and Biochemistry from the University of Valencia and the University of Bologna, followed by postdoctoral training at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and UCLA. Throughout his distinguished career, he has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed scientific publications and received numerous international honors for his groundbreaking contributions to developmental biology and regenerative medicine.
